Verizon Wireless consumers were unable to obtain feeds of faster than 10Mbps while joined to Netflix, the group verified to News this week it was carrying “network measurement over the past few days to optimize the production of video applications on our system.”
While New Companies were able to prove Verizon Wireless appeared to be capping Netflix stream at about 5Mbps and 10Mbps, the possible throttling would not significantly affect most users. On mobile, Netflix should have worked fine for maximum users other than those streaming high-quality video over a tethered joint. Some users told similar throttling of YouTube video, though again at a 10Mbps rate which provided high-quality streaming.
Just a few months ago, Verizon declared its new unlimited data plan wouldn’t restrict video at least till users hit 22GB of data. For its part, the group told News the video throttling was “over the board” and hit its own video streaming services, not simply third-party services.
However, with FCC Chairman Ajit Pai apparently dead-set on choking net neutrality to death, Verizon might soon get an occasion to test many new and exciting forms of data throttling on its customers.
