Now, Russia appears to be going towards a similar decision as well following China.
The bill to prevent the use of software such as proxy websites, proxy servers or virtual private networks (VPNs) in the nation was established by the State Duma (lower house) of the Russian Parliament on Friday. It is yet to be approved by the upper house and the President, but once done, the country’s internet service providers will need to block access to any providers of proxy co-operation.
As per Russian legislators, the movement would extra help enforce the country’s ban on extreme content hosted online. Currently, there is no information on whether any specific provisions are available for businesses that rely on global content or people that need access to such services. We will understand more about the law in the coming weeks.
The State Duma on Friday consistently passed a bill that would require Internet providers to prevent websites that offer VPN services. Many Russians use VPNs to reach blocked content by routing joints through servers outside the country.
The lawmakers after the bill claimed that the move could help to make Russia’s ban on distributing extremist content online.
The bill has to be passed by the upper assembly of Parliament and approved by the president before it gets into effect.
