Official rollback assumed catching a mid-December meeting
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai declared last winter that he would take “a pot whacker” to the laws. Pai argues that the rules which restrict internet service providers like Comcast and AT&T from tinkering with the rate of certain websites and applications are blocking innovation in the industry. Supporters of the models, such as the nonpartisan Free Press, argue that “without net neutrality, cable and phone organizations could carve the internet into fast and slow lanes This would kill the open internet.”
If the dismantling is done, internet providers will have “more elasticity to use bundles of services and creative pricing to make their preferred content more attractive to consumers,” The News explains. Or, as Slate puts it: “Without system neutrality rules, internet providers stand to make a lot of money, since the businesses will be able to operate what is basically a two-way toll collecting money from both supporters and websites that want to reach those users at securer speeds.”
The new rules are anticipated to be announced Wednesday, British tech website The News writes, adding that “the significant point, as we’ve said before, is that once the genie is out of the lamp, getting it back in is nearly impossible.”
