Firefox Will Soon Warn Users about sites that have been hacked

Mozilla engineers are developing a new notifications system for Firefox which will show a security warning when users hit a website that has been hacked. The notifications system will use data from Have I Been Pwned?, which is a website that records public data breaches and enables users to search and check if their data was leaked in any of the breaches.

According to Troy Hunt, the Australian security researcher behind Have I Been Pwned:
“yes, we’re doing some awesome things with @mozilla and @haveibeenpwned. We’re looking at a few different models for how this might work, the main takeaway at present is that there’s an intent to surface data about one’s exposure directly within the browser”

This update is still in the initial stages, but anyone can download it from Github, then compile and add to Firefox if you want to test it out, but it will only work with the Developer Edition.

The new notification system will display a warning when the user visits a website that suffered a data breach, it even holds an input field which will presumably let users search to check if their data was leaked in that website’s data breach.
