Someone’s Trying to Hack The GPS System, Warns Government Officials

The US GPS satellite system is at risk and may get hacked in the near future, as per government officials. There’s news that it is possible to hack the GPS system, which means we should all worry.

John Garamendi, the California congressman, is severely concerned about this major national security and economic issue.

Garamendi currently represents California’s 3rd District and is serving on the Armed Services and Transportation & Infrastructure committee.

According to him anonymous forces are obstructing and interfering with the GPS, making the situation as dangerous as it can be.

There are quite a lot incidences that have happened in the past that the congressman points to, including the last year spoofing attack on the GPS causing twenty ships in the Black Sea to appear in the wrong location.

In a different case, a truck driver used a GPS jammer, which was bought on the black market, to elude his boss ending up ‘knocking out’ New Jersey’s Newark International Airport as he was driving nearby, causing the flights system to fail.

We also saw two major incidents last summer when two merchant ships crashed into the U.S. destroyers, USS John McCain in the South China Sea and the USS  Fitzgerald near Japan. Seveteen U.S. sailors were killed in the two accidents.

The  U.S. Naval Investigative Report stated that it was not a deliberate GPS attack but the congressman was not convinced and he is not alone.

According to Greg Winfree, executive of Texas A&M Transportation Institute and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, it is not possible for navy ships to collide with supply ships.

As always, Russia is being suspected of these malevolent plots, but there is no proof at the moment.

A backup system plan is being spearheaded by the congressman in current year’s National Defense Authorization Act, which would cost millions of dollars. However, he says that it can help save money and lives since it is clearly possible to hack the GPS system, according to him.
