According to reports, Dutch intelligence agencies have turned the tables around by breaking into the computers of the powerful Russian hacking groups. It is believed that these hacked computers may also possess evidence regarding the breach of the Democratic National Committee of U.S.

Hackers, who were working for the Netherland’s General Intelligence and Security Service, penetrated the Russian Hacker group, often called Cozy Bear’s, systems in 2014 and watched them for almost a year, even managing to catch the hackers on camera.

The nationally respected daily Volkskrant and the current affairs show Nieuwsuur were the sources of this report.

The Dutch hackers also managed to capture the Russian Hacker’s cyber crime activities on camera.

While the Netherland’s officials have declined to comment on the episode, country’s Interior Minister,, Kajsa Ollongren, appreciated the efforts of their intelligence agencies.

Volkskrant also mentioned that American spies were very appreciated and even sent the Dutch team flowers and a cake to appreciate their efforts.

The Russian hacking group was later identified as one of two government backed hacking groups who broke into the Democratic National Committee ahead of the presidential election of 2016.

According to reports, the authorities are now after the second group, called the Fancy Bear. According to the Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, the two groups acted independently.
