If a Facebook page is discovered to be frequently sharing fake stories, the organization will forbid the page from promotion on Facebook. The organization uses third-party fact-checking systems to flag stories that are false. Under Facebook’s rules, merchants are now not allowed to run ads that link to false stories, but this new update brings that ban a step further.

In a blog post, the organization says it is breaking down on the “situations of Pages using Facebook ads to increase their public in order to spread the false news more broadly.” This newest effort is aimed at putting these false news pages from earning money. But if an offending page prevents sharing false stories, Facebook tells the page may get permission to run ads again.

Since the 2016 US official election, Facebook’s many forces combating fake news have involved watching suspicious accounts that publish fake news and getting out prints ads in the UK advising people how to spot fake news. In today’s statement, Facebook says misinformation is bad and calls out Pages who published the fake news for presenting the world “less informed.”

Previously, Facebook stated that it was preventing advertisers from advertising stories that link to false news. Now it’s ramping up its work by blocking Pages from advertising at all if they have been flagged too numerous times for spreading false news.

Facebook called out false news for growing mistrust and making “the society less informed.” Product directors at the company saw that people were applying ads on Facebook to build a false news empire.
