A WordPress WooCommerce plugin vulnerability threatened more than 60,000 websites. The vulnerability in the plugin named WooCommerce Checkout Manager plugin could allow arbitrary file uploads. Users must ensure upgrading to the latest plugin version 4.3 to avoid possible exploit following the public disclosure of the flaw.
WordPress WooCommerce Plugin Vulnerability
Reportedly, a serious WordPress WooCommerce plugin vulnerability put thousands of websites at risk of being hacked. The flaw existed in the WooCommerce Checkout Manager that could allow a potential attacker to execute arbitrary file uploads. What’s risky here is that the researchers have made full disclosure of the flaw due to conflicts in the WordPress forum with moderators.
“Due to the moderators of the WordPress Support Forum’s continued inappropriate behavior we are full disclosing vulnerabilities in protest until WordPress gets that situation cleaned up.”
The researchers from the Plugin Vulnerabilities have described the flaw along with the proof of concept in their blog post. As reported, a flaw existed in the ‘Categorized File Upload’ setting of the plugin. While the plugin has the file upload feature inactive by default, an enabled ‘Categorized File Upload’ option could allow an attacker to upload any .php file to a location they could access.
Flaw Patched Recently
According to the stats shown on the plugin’s site, the WooCommerce Checkout Manager has more than 60,000 active installations. It means that the flaw discussed above could threaten all those >60,000 websites.
Following the public disclosure of the vulnerability, the developers, Visser Labs, quickly pulled off the plugin to avoid any mishaps. The developer Michael Visser also disclosed working on a fix in response to the PV blog post.
Fortunately, the patched version of the plugin is now available, as evident from the announcement made by Michael Visser. So now, the users of this plugin should ensure upgrading to the latest version 4.3 to stay protected.
