On 6/11/2015 (Thursday) twitter announced that it is expanding the character-limit from 140-10,000 in its direct messages. For comparison, Facebook Messanger has a character limit of 20,000.
According to Sachin Agarwal, Twitter’s DM head said that, the character limit change will launch in July. He also said that this won’t change the 140-character limit on public tweets.

Not sure how I feel about Twitter waving the character limit on DMs. Makes messaging fun and to the point! http://t.co/AOxY451gjA

Direct messages in other social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn do not have such length limits. “You may be wondering what this means for the public side of Twitter. Nothing! Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today,” he added.
