Maybe you’ve heard of the dangerous underground tunnels lying beneath Virginia Tech or Illinois Tech.
For many young adults in the area, the rumors of the scary and dangerous tunnels are more amusing than they are terrifying. Because of this, many will go looking for the tunnels without considering the truth: they are dangerous and for good reason.
Finding information on the tunnels is easy. On the other hand, finding a guide to actually access the tunnels is another story.
For many underground tunnels, entrance is illegal (for obvious reasons). This makes instructions on accessing them difficult to find . . . unless you know where to look.
Recently, two links were posted on a dark web reddit containing information on accessing both the Virginia Tech underground tunnels and the Illinois Tech underground tunnels.
Despite the websites literally having maps and detailed instructions on entrance to the different tunnels, they also write on their homepage:
“I’m sure it’s not even necessary to mention that people have been exploring Virginia Tech’s steam tunnels since they were built. This doesn’t mean that you should, though. While most of the entrances are kept unlocked, many of them are in plain view. All of the tunnels have posted “No Trespassing” signs, which makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia to enter them. It’s also against university policy, although the tunnels are not specifically mentioned.
The steam tunnels are also dangerous. Since the steam pipes carry steam, they get very hot, so you can be burned quite easily. They could even burst, which would most likely kill you. If that’s not enough, some sections of tunnel, particularly older sections, have asbestos insulation, which can cause all sorts of lung problems. In short, do not attempt to enter the steam tunnels.”
Combined, the two websites offer guides on the following tunnels:
