Two Brothers Arrested in Costa Rica Child Abuse Case

Unfortunately, we are no strangers to the knowledge that pedophilia is common on the dark web. Even if you don’t click on the links, you can almost always find them (even on the Hidden Wikis). The sad reality is that these websites are not all honeypots or “click bait” – some of them are very real and very dangerous.

May 23rd was the day 35-year-old Rojas Retana was arrested and a 9-year-old girl was rescued from years of sexual abuse. Rojas was arrested for producing and distributing child pornography on the dark web, as well as sexually assaulting the 9-year-old girl since she was 6.

Authorities confirmed that Rojas was able to target the child via his relation to the parents, who considered the man to be like an “adopted son”. Rojas was renting an apartment from the parents, and would regularly complete random house jobs for the couple.

Luckily, law enforcement officials were able to track Rojas by his IP address.

“The investigation started with Interpol alerting Costa Rica’s Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ – Judicial Investigation Agency in English) of a suspect, identified by the last name Rojas, who allegedly posted images and videos of sexually explicit content of the nine-year-old victim on darknet pedophile forums.

According to the police information, investigators obtained the IP address of the 35-year-old suspect and followed it to a two-story building in San Miguel de Higuito de Desamparados, where the upload of the child porn content was allegedly conducted.”

After the investigation of his home, videos, pictures, and a digital trail provided further evidence of the crimes that took place; including the sexual abuse. Several days after the arrest of Rojas, his 37-year-old brother was arrested under the same charges.

Following the first brother’s arrest, the prosecutor’s office ordered 12-months preventive detention until further notice. It’s to be assumed that his brother will receive the same sentence.
