Lindsey, UC Santa Cruz sociology professor described in the news how EDGI got roused in November 2016, within days of the presidential election. Its patrons are scientists and academics whose main goal was to make certain that researchers and citizens would stay to have access to data about the atmosphere. They organized data rescue incidents around the country, where volunteers identified exposed climate information on websites for various government agencies, including the EPA, DOE, and even NASA. The Internet Archive maintained by creating digital records of all the at-risk pages.

Though there are many records laws that stop the government from fully purging information collected by its agencies, the administration can take information offline. That indicates the data is available, but only in one physical place. Lindsey pointed out that this makes it so difficult for community organizers to gain access to data about their home regions.

Lindsey also spoke about a new report that EDGI has published on the history of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA, formed under President Nixon during the 1970s, is subject to many protections we take for given today. Protections that guarantee freshwater, toxic waste cleanup and good air quality are all part of the EPA’s mandate.

Today, the Trump administration pledges to cut the EPA’s budget by one-third, and it has designated Scott Pruitt to head the agency. Pruitt, who sued the EPA 14 times throughout his tenure as Oklahoma Attorney General, has just started an initiative to “challenge” climate change data.

By conducting discussions with over 60 current and retired EPA workers, Lindsey and her associates gained insight into how the agency is becoming under the new presidential administration. They also highlighted two different examples of governments cracking down on environmental analysis: in Canada under the Harper administration, and in the US during the early 1980s.
