FireFox Cliqz with User Data Collection is being launched by Mozilla

Mozilla has a market relationship with Cliqz GMBH. The German business acquired Ghostery recently and controls its own web browser as well as browser add-ons.

Mozilla’s relationship with Cliqz began when the company added Cliqz as a social provider in Firefox. Cliqz was begun in early 2017 as a Firefox Test Pilot test.

Cliqz adds real-time effects and suggestions to Firefox’s location bar. If you type “weather Amsterdam” for example, a weather forecast is presented directly in the Firefox address bar.

Mozilla published today on its German journalist blog that it prepares to run a Cliqz research in the coming weeks.

This experiment will run only in Germany and for shorter than one percent of users who download Firefox from Mozilla’s website. These users will have Cliqz activated as an add-on automatically according to Mozilla.

Mozilla sees that it is important to transfer label bar content to Cliqz servers to power the functionality. This suggests, essentially that anything that is inserted into the address bar, either automatically or manually, is transferred to Cliqz.

In other words, users who are chosen for participation are opted-in automatically in the data collecting.

Cliqz runs cleanup methods according to Mozilla to ensure that sensitive information is not given. The company deletes IP address furthermore and does not create user browsing profiles either.

Mozilla Firefox users who don’t need to use Cliqz may deactivate the add-on or disable it instead.

  1. Load about: addons in the browser’s location bar to start the Add-ons Manager.
  2. You take the character in the experiment if you see Cliqz listed there (and have not added it through other means).
  3. You may impair or remove Cliqz from Firefox using keys provided on the page.
