Belle Fourche Hack: Another One in The City

In a world where the number of victims of cyber attacks are increasing rapidly, the city of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, became the latest victim of the hackers.

Recently, cyber criminals attempted to hack Belle Fourche servers. They were able to encrypt programs, but the systems were soon up and running thanks to restoration.

At the discovery of the cyber attack, the staff within the city hall changed program passwords or shut down their computers to prevent further loss,

According to a city personnel, the hacker’s efforts were thwarted and no sensitive information was believed to be compromised.

The Ransomware Attack?

Nora Erhart’s desktop computer was among the affected ones. According to the payroll and human resource employee, the hackers penetrated into the system via a program that the management puts to transfer documents and other data on the cloud.

According to Nora, the attackers were capable enough to get through the complete encryption process on the IT server and after the completion of the process, a message appeared on the computer screen of the IT team member demanding a ransom for the recovery of the data.

The IP addresses of the hackers were traced by the IT staff, linking to Nigeria and Russia.

As Nora explained, it was fortunate that the hackers couldn’t get into the data region. The system locked, even preventing staff members from accessing it.

The city management is confident that sensitive information that is stored on the city server was not compromised in this Belle Fourche hack case.
