The FCCs’ Net Neutrality repeal officially came into effect Monday which reverses net neutrality protections that were implemented by former chairman Tom Wheeler. The new process is named “Restoring Internet Freedom”, however despite the name the process could allow ISPs to throttle web apps and enable them to provide faster lines to companies that pay for bandwidth. In a speech, Ajit Pai said that these rules and regulations will make the internet better.
“I support a free and open internet. The internet should be an open platform where you are free to go where you want and say and do what you want, without having to ask anyone’s permission. And under the Federal Communications Commission’s Restoring Internet Freedom Order, which takes effect Monday, the internet will be just such an open platform. Our framework will protect consumers and promote better, faster internet access and more competition.”
The claims by Pai are untrue, despite making many promises that he will fix the internet. Many of the states in the US such as Oregon, Washington, and California are starting to pass their own local Net Neutrality rules.
Ajit Pai’s Restoring Internet Freedom was operated in purview of already existing Telecommunication companies. The past few years, the internet has been exploding with new ideas, among them, Skype, Firefox Send, YouTube, and Netflix has completely changed on how the users consume media content. In an interview on Friday with the Ajit Pai, chairman of FCC said: “I don’t think consumers are going to see any change at all”.
While many of us agree on the core values of free and open internet, one could argue it is not good to place a regulatory framework over the open internet. Many people have been frustrated by the decision made by the FCC and it would seem the fight is not over yet.
