COSCO Shipping Company Services Down Due to Ransomware

An infection in the COSCO’s network has crippled the network of the US’s largest shipping network COSCO (China Ocean Shipping Company).

“Due to local network failure within our America regions, local email and network telephone cannot operate correctly at the moment,” said the company in a press release. “For safety cares, we have shut down the links with other regions for further investigations.”

The incident happened on 24th July in the American Region. The email servers, telephone, network are down according to a Facebook published by the company. The company’s website is still down. The employees of the company have started using their personal Yahoo emails to provide support for the customers.

There are a lot of companies like COSCO who have suffered Ransomware attacks like these. For Example, AP Moller-Maersk, the world’s largest shipping firm has been affected with the NotPetya ransomware. The CEO of Maersk said that their engineers had to reinstall the OS of 4000 servers, 45,000 PCs and 2500 applications over a period of 10 days. While the COSCO is way too small when compared to the Maersk’s NotPetya attack.

There are even cases of Maersk’s shipments blocked at ports due to the NotPetya Ransomware, COSCO in the other hand didn’t suffer from these problems.

“We have and will continue to assess developments and take corresponding measures to minimize the impact of current events on business,” the company said in its note to customers.
