Brazil’s Crypto Trading Platform Atlas Suffered Data Breach

Every time a crypto exchange is hacked, the outcome turns out to be a financial loss. We already know of several instances where these cryptocurrency exchanges lost millions. This time, we hear of a data breach at the Brazilian crypto trading platform Atlas Quantum. Reportedly, Atlas exposed more than 261 thousand customer records to the hackers in this incident.

Crypto Trading Platform Atlas Quantum Suffered Data Breach

Atlas Quantum is an arbitrage crypto investment platform in Brazil. Reportedly, it holds around 27 million customers and the assets of over $30 million.

On Saturday, the Brazilian crypto trading platform Atlas Quantum put up a notice on their Facebook page regarding a cyber attack. As disclosed, the arbitrage crypto platform suffered a data breach, exposing more than 260K customer records to unknown hackers.

According to their official Facebook notice, Atlas Quantum discovered a data leakage from their system. After the discovery, the officials quickly began relevant investigations regarding the matter.

“We became aware early on Saturday night that a security incident involving the leakage of data from our customers occurred. We are conducting an investigation with our information security advisor to understand the incident in more detail and we will cooperate with the appropriate authorities.”

The breach is not typical to a lot of crypto firms reported as it does not involve pilfering of money in this case. Rather the attackers targeted users’ data. The officials confirm this in their notice,

“We would like to point out that this is not a steal of bitcoins in custody or violation of our accounts in the exchanges. However, our customer base was exposed.”

Although they did not disclose any specific number of affected users in their notice, HaveIBeenPwned.com has indexed 261,463 accounts, indicating the number of victims of the breach. Further describing the incident, HIBP informs that the breached details include customers’ names, email address, contact numbers and account balances.

No Private Keys Or Passwords Leaked

While the hackers managed to steal email addresses and other details of Atlas Quantum customers, they confirm that the private keys and passwords remained encrypted during the breach. Moreover, they also took necessary steps right after discovering the breach, to halt the attack.

“We took immediate steps to protect the database and passwords and private keys remain encrypted.”

In addition, they have also temporarily halted a few features on the platform to maintain their security. As stated, they will inform about the reactivation accordingly whenever complete.
