Potential Dell Data Breach Might Have Exposed Customer Information

In a time when cyber attacks and data breaches have become a routine, what makes them interesting is when an IT firm becomes a victim themselves. Recently, Dell suffered a potential cyber attack on their systems. This Dell data breach may have exposed personal details of customers to potential attackers. The company confirms that they succeeded in disrupting the breach.

Potential Dell Data Breach Announced By The Vendor

In a recent disclosure statement, Dell informs customers of a cybersecurity incident targeting its network. The alleged Dell data breach may have allowed attackers access to customer information. The company announced the following details in an attempt to keep its customers informed of the situation.

According to the details given in the statement, the firm noticed unauthorized activity on its networks on November 9, 2018. Right after detection, Dell took the necessary steps to successfully counter the attack.

“On November 9, 2018, Dell detected and disrupted unauthorized activity on our network that attempted to extract Dell.com customer information, limited to names, email addresses and hashed passwords. Upon detection, we immediately implemented countermeasures and began an investigation.”

Dell Reset Passwords As Security Precaution

While the breach supposedly targeted customers’ information, the firm confirms that the data remained safe.

“Through that investigation, we found no conclusive evidence that any customer information was taken. Furthermore, there is no indication that any credit card or other sensitive customer information was targeted.”

Moreover, the company’s products and services also remained secured. Nonetheless, out of an abundance of caution, Dell reset passwords of customers’ accounts on their website. This compels all users to change their passwords the next time they log in to their accounts.

Besides resetting passwords, Dell also urges customers to ensure the use of unique passwords, which should contain a blend of upper and lower case letters in an alphanumeric fashion. Moreover, they also advise use to never reuse login credentials on other sites to protect the accounts from cyber attacks, such as credential stuffing attacks.
