Konica Minolta Ransomware Attack

Reportedly, the Japanese technology giant Konica Minolta has suffered a ransomware attack. The incident hit the firm a few weeks ago and took time for the company to remediate it.

The news about the attack surfaced online after the customers noticed website outages. According to a post shared on Reddit, customers faced trouble in accessing the product supply and support site. They could see the following outage message on the website.

The Konica Minolta MyKMBS customer portal is temporarily unavailable. We are working hard to resolve the issue and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. If you need immediate assistance for service, please call our Global Customer Services at 1-800-456-5664 (US) or 1-800-263-4410 (Canada).

The outage continued for about a week with no update from the firm to the customers. All that they did was to update the outage message to link back a support document asking the customers to perform a reset.

Eventually, Bleeping Computer broke the news that the firm had suffered a ransomware attack. They could also identify the new ransomware to be responsible for this attack – the RansomEXX ransomware.

About RansomEXX

As revealed, the ransom note received by Bleeping Computer clearly addressed the firm Konica Minolta. The ransom note even clearly specified the data encryption with extension “.K0N1M1N0” in the note.

For now, it isn’t clear whether the firm had paid the ransom to the attackers for recovery or not.

As for the RansomEXX, Konica Minolta isn’t its first target. Rather it surfaced online in late June 2020 when it targeted the Texas Department of Transportation.

Konica Minolta is a Japan-based multinational that operates in 49 countries globally. The firm is known for producing industrial imaging products such as laser printers, multi-functional peripherals (MFPs), copiers, and digital print systems.
