Microsoft Defender VPN Detects Unsafe WiFi
As elaborated in a recent post, Microsoft Defender now detects and warns users when connecting to unsafe public WiFi networks.
Microsoft Defender has long been a comprehensive antivirus solution for Microsoft users. However, with the recent changes, which Microsoft named “Defender VPN,” the security feature provides users with additional digital protection. The Defender VPN lets users secure online traffic by rerouting it through Microsoft servers. Hence, users could enable this feature when connecting to unsecure public WiFi networks.
The tech giant rolled out this feature last year on a limited scale. Even at present, the Defender VPN is only available to users in the US, UK, Germany, and Canada. Yet, the feature is also available for Android and iOS users and is integrated with the Defender security app, attracting a broad user base.
While Defender VPN previously served as a regular VPN, it now empowers users with swift privacy protection by implementing unsecure WiFi detection. With this feature, Microsoft Defender VPN automatically detects and warns users about unsecure WiFi networks, preventing accidental exposure. That means it will prompt users to enable the Defender VPN right after detecting an unsecure network, ensuring they stay aware of their online security when using public networks.
With “unsecure,” Microsoft typically refers to public WiFi networks with weak encryption. This feature is available for all supported devices – Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.
In addition, the latest Defender update for mobile users also alerts users of “unsafe” or suspicious WiFi networks.
Microsoft also plans to expand Defender VPN’s availability to more users, expanding its services to ten countries across Europe, LATAM, and Asia.
