The Indian business and technology giant Tata Technologies recently disclosed that it was facing a ransomware attack. The incident caused partial disruptions in the company’s services. Nonetheless, the firm could restore the usual operations in a short time.
Ransomware Attack Hit Tata Technologies
According to a recent public notice, Tata Technologies fell prey to a disruptive ransomware attack.
Sharing the details in the notice bearing the signatures of Vikrant Gandhi, Company Secretary, dated January 31, 2025, the firm revealed that the incident affected some of the firm’s IT assets. Following the incident, the company suspended some of its services out of caution. Nonetheless, it wasn’t a massive or long outage, and Tata Technologies confirmed service restoration soon after.
Besides service restoration, the firm also confirmed facing no impact of the cybersecurity incident on its client delivery services.
Until the time of writing this story, the exact identity of the threat actors behind this attack and the root through which they could succeed in compromising Tata Tech’s network is unclear. Yet, the firm has assured of ongoing investigations on this matter. The organization is committed to applying remedial strategies to fend off the threat.
For now, no specific claim from any ransomware group has surfaced online. Hence, it remains unclear if the ransomware attack actually succeeded in encrypting the firm’s sensitive data, if the threat actors could steal any data, and if Tata has paid or is planning to pay the attackers any ransom.
It seems strange compared to some past ransomware attacks, in which the attackers boastfully owned the attack publicly to pressurize the firm into paying ransom or to add to their credibility in the dark world.
This isn’t the firm cybersecurity incident against Tata. In 2022, another subsidiary of the same group, Tata Power, also suffered a ransomware attack. However, at that time, the attackers, the Hive ransomware group, didn’t take much time to own the attack.
