After expressing concern for some time, Mark Zuckerberg, the brain behind Meta (formerly Facebook), showed the door to some staff members. According to recent reports, Meta officially fired some employees, alleging internal information leaks.
Meta Fired ‘Roughly 20’ Employees Alleging Leaks
According to The Verge, Meta recently fired some of its employees, allegedly linking them with internal information leaks.
Specifically, Meta recently fired roughly 20 employees, holding them responsible for leaking the company’s internal discussions to the public. Quoting an exclusive statement from Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold, The Verge reported,
We tell employees when they join the company, and we offer periodic reminders, that it is against our policies to leak internal information, no matter the intent.
Despite clear instructions, Meta employees allegedly continue to share inside communications, meeting details, and other internal data. Hence, the firm has begun tracking down such employees and firing them. In the recent wave, Meta confirmed terminating roughly 20 employees following internal investigations.
We recently conducted an investigation that resulted in roughly 20 employees being terminated for sharing confidential information outside the company,
More Firings Expected As The Firm Tracks Down ‘Leakers’
Meta has expressed concerns about inside communication leaks several times. These concerns continue to rise as Meta’s, specifically Zuckerberg’s, remarks during internal meetings continue to leak. Some of these insider leaks even include details such as unannounced product plans and overall internal communications.
Earlier this year, Meta’s CISO, Guy Rosen, explained that such insider leaks not only pose a security risk, but also negatively impact worker’s morale.
When information is stolen or leaked, there are repercussions beyond the immediate security impact. Our teams become demoralized and we all waste time that is better spent working on our products and toward our goals and mission.
Even then, Rosen warned all the staff to take this matter seriously, as the firm would be taking necessary action against the guilty employees. Rosen also emphasized possible terminations in this regard and hinted at similar actions taken in the firm’s history due to information leaks.
We recently terminated relationships with employees who leaked confidential company information inappropriately and exfiltrated sensitive documents.
With the recent wave of employee terminations, Meta is even preparing for more as it continues to identify offenders.
We expect there will be more. We take this seriously, and will continue to take action when we identify leaks.”
For now, it remains unclear who the terminated employees are and how many more are to join the list. Yet, what’s clear is that Meta is now taking strict measures to contain insider leaks.
