Microsoft stops charging for some operating systems

Microsoft plans to stop charging a fee for its Windows operating software for some smartphones and small tablets, in a recognition the company needs a new strategy for areas of the mobile market it has badly lagged.

Terry Myerson, the executive in charge of the Windows and Windows Phone smartphone software, made the pricing disclosure at an event Wednesday for software developers in San Francisco. Myerson said the “zero dollars” price will apply to phones, and tablets with screen sizes smaller than nine inches.
