If you have never heard of PRTG, it’s Free Network Monitoring Software that you install on a Windows machine preferably a dedicated one, but it doesn’t have to be, the software then monitors your network and monitors all your other devices. It can monitor Windows PCs and servers, Linux machines, and pretty much everything else.
PRTG Network Monitor runs on a Windows machine within your network, collecting various statistics from the machines, software, and devices which you designate. (It can also auto-discover them, helping you map out your network.) It also retains the data so you can see historical performance, helping you react to changes. However this is just ONE of the many custom uses this software can be used for.
A few years ago, PRTG was free if you only needed to monitor 10 things across your entire collection of servers. Then they increased it to 30. Today the company announced that the limit for the freeware version was being raised to 100 sensors, which previously cost $440.
If you have never tried this great app, the present is the perfect time. See www.paessler.com for the download, which runs to a 150 MB file. The program is malware-free according to Web of Trust and the virus scanner.
