No iPhone 8 and iPhone 9, 2017 Model Will be “iPhone 10”

Earlier this year, there were rumors that Apple planned to launch the new iPhone model as a variation of the iPhone 6, possibly called iPhone 6 SE, in order to save the iPhone 7 designation for next-year’s product which marks the 10th anniversary of the device.

And while this did make sense at some point, Apple decided that it wasn’t the right moment for skipping a generation and launched the new model as iPhone 7, making many wonder how the company plans to call the anniversary version coming out next year.

Cowen’s Timothy Arcuri says this isn’t a difficult guess because it’s more than obvious that Apple would call it “iPhone 10.” This means the company will skip several models, including iPhone 7s, iPhone 8, iPhone 8s, iPhone 9, and iPhone 9s.

At some level, such a rumor actually makes sense, especially because it’ll be the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, so launching an iPhone 10 perfectly aligns with this moment.

What’s also very important is that the analyst believes that the iPhone 10 will generate a massive boost in terms of sales, as the existing model is just a transition iPhone to prepare the big overhaul next year. Furthermore, such a major overhaul would also lead to more upgrades from the existing userbase, the analyst says.

“iPhone 7 is proving an effective ‘bridge’ to the iPhone 10 super-cycle in ’17, where a powder keg of a dramatically aging installed base lurks just under the surface such that C17 Street revs/EPS are 10%+ too low. Raise target to $135, which even still seems too low,” the analyst was quoted as saying.

Without a doubt, there’s more to find out about Apple’s plans, so it’s safer to take this with a pinch of salt for the time being, even though it makes sense at some level to get an iPhone 10 next year. It remains to be seen if Apple is ready to follow a strategy similar Samsung’s and skip at least one generation for its flagship product.
