Android Oreo issue makes phones always prefer mobile data

If you are using Android Oreo (Android 8.0) you should keep an eye on your mobile data mode until Google patches an issue that causes phones to prefer using mobile data even when the phone’s mobile WiFi connection is enabled.

Basically, Mobiles can connect to the Internet in two methods. Via a local access point or WiFi connection or by connecting to the mobile carrier’s network (mobile data connection). The Android OS will prefer the WiFi connection over mobile data to avoid incurring extra costs on the user’s mobile strategy.

The bug has been discovered after many users who recently updated to the latest Android version had the unpleasant shock of finding out huge spike in data usage.

According to a user from Reddit:
“After updating to Oreo last night, I received a huge spike in data usage, all the while being connected to Wi-Fi. I contacted support and was told that they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. In the meantime I have turned off mobile data while at home, so only Wi-Fi is being used”

users are recommended to use Developer Options and disable Mobile Data to make sure that the mobile isn’t using mobile data needlessly.
