In allegedly violating Game Industry Promotion Law, thirteen people were arrested by the South Korean government in the investigation of overwatch hacking incident.
It was announced by the Blizzard entertainment on the Korean forum of the virtual game Overwatch, that the suspects were brought to the Korean prosecutor’s office for the violation of the Information and Communication Technology Protection Law and the Game Industry Promotion Law.
The suspects violated the gaming laws by making hacks for the world renowned online game, Overwatch, while some of the suspects are also being accused of match fixing.
Earlier, a request was submitted to the Seoul National Police Agency Cyber Security Department by the California based video game developing and publishing company, Blizzard Entertainment, for a thorough and detailed investigation of the matter.
According to Blizzard Entertainment, the investigation took almost one year to complete, and after a lengthy period of investigation, a total of thirteen individuals are being suspected to be involved.
They were all sent to the office of the public prosecutor under the allegations.
In June of 2017, an amendment in the law came into effect which proposed stricter punishments and penalties for the criminals who were caught hacking or boosting games.
The convicted individuals will most likely serve up to 2 years of jail time and a fine up to $18,000. This came after they released assistance cheats for the game.
Blizzard has always found it difficult to control cheaters, especially in Korea, where it is common for players to visit gaming areas to enjoy games, making it difficult to identify them. Overwatch hacking is not the first incident of its kind for the game maker, but it hopes for it to be the last.
