Spencer to lead Cyber Security 101

The deficit of computer security has a very major news lately. Companies have started to lose public trust by falling prey to identity theft on a large scale.

The McCracken County Public Library is going to sponsor a discussion program at 7 p.m. that is going to address this topic. Wes Spencer will present Cyber-Security 101, which is going to be the 2nd program in the library’s 101 Series in 2018.

Spencer has been a cyber-security professional for several years. He has also served as a professor of information security in the program of telecommunications systems management at Murray State for around 7 years. During that period, he trained hundreds of students who are now working in security departments all around the globe!

In the year 2017, he took the position of the chief information systems officer at the Perch Security, which is a small security software startup based in Tampa, Florida. Its mission is to support organizations protect themselves against any sort of network threats.

In this discussion, the primary focus will be on some of the key quick wins that people and small corporations can do to keep themselves safe and protected from any cyber risk. Spencer was of the view that people will actually be surprised at how easy and simple it is to keep yourself safe from malicious cyber threats by taking some basic precautions.

Spencer was of the view that most cyber crime is propagated by tricking someone into doing things they shouldn’t be doing e.g. clicking phishing links, opening fraudulent documents and falling for a telephone scam.

“We should do the same thing for our communities. Being armed with the knowledge of how and why cyber criminals work will go a long way for everyone. That’s one reason I’m so passionate about sharing my knowledge. It’s a great way to give back, and I truly believe it benefits everyone.”
