The databases of Australian organization Family Planning New South Wales (NSW) were hit by a cyber attack by unknown hackers. These databases held information of around 8,000 people who have had contacted Family Planning NSW in the past 2.5 years. These included patients who wanted to discuss family planning and some even went through life changing experiences such as abortions.
Why Did The Hackers Do This?
Family Planning NSW had received an email by a hacking group who demanded $15,000 Bitcoins on Anzac Day. The non-profit agency ignored the email which stated that the website will be taken down if ransom wasn’t paid, after which, this security breach occurred.
The website is known to provide sexual health and reproduction related services in its 5 clinics in different parts of Sydney.
What Is The Reaction Of The Agency?
The agency took down its website today and claims to have secured the databases. However, the information might have already been leaked. The customers were notified of this breach via emails that offered an apology as well.
The company hasn’t talked about the culprits yet but the experts are trying to find the hackers.
The Bottomline
While the world was shocked that hackers hacked family planning NSW, the agency claims that the data is secure and no alterations have been made so far.
