Poloniex Crypto Exchange Data Leak

Reportedly, on December 30, 2019, many Poloniex users shared a copy of emails on Twitter that they received from the exchange. The content of the email seemingly revealed a security incident impacting users’ security. Specifically, it informed of a data leak incident at Poloniex crypto exchange.

The email read,

A couple of hours ago we discovered that someone leaked a list of email addresses and passwords on Twitter, claiming the information could be used to log in to Poloniex accounts.

Since the email came almost abruptly to every user, some of them deemed it a scam.

Therefore, Poloniex Support had to once again confirm the legitimacy of the email (and the hack).

At present, the crypto exchange hasn’t revealed any further details about the exact number of affectees of this incident. Nor have they explained anything about how the leaked details reached Twitter.

Poloniex Resets Users Passwords

Following the incident, the exchange contacted customers to ensure their account security. Through their emails, Poloniex asked all users to update passwords as they forced a password reset. This was even applicable for accounts whose email addresses remained unaffected during the incident.

While almost all of the email addresses listed do not belong to Poloniex accounts, we are forcing a password reset on any email addresses listed that do have an account with us including yours.

Poloniex is one of the prominent names in the cryptocurrency realm. Recently, they have acquired the largest decentralized exchange (DEX) on the Tron blockchain network (TRX).

In December 2019, a South Korean crypto exchange Upbit also suffered a hacking attack. The incident cost losses of $48.5 million worth of cryptocurrency to the exchange.
