ProtonVPN Opens Up Browser Extension Feature To Free Users

Continuing with its product improvements and feature upgrades to facilitate users, ProtonVPN recently made another useful announcement. Specifically, ProtonVPN free users can now use the VPN’s web browser extension on their devices.

Earlier, ProtonVPN’s browser extension was a paid facility. While the service did offer browser extensions alongside the dedicated VPN clients for different devices, only premium users could download the add-on on their devices.

For free users, ProtonVPN offers a VPN client for desktops and mobile devices with some limited features and unlimited data usage. Although this free account provision empowered the users to protect their browsing sessions, it somewhat hindered users’ routine activities, particularly for those who did not require protecting their device’s entire traffic.

But now, with the web browser extensions, free ProtonVPN users may simply install and run the VPN add-on to secure their browsing sessions without affecting the other apps on their devices.

The add-on is available for all Chromium-based browsers, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Brave and Vivaldi, as well as for Mozilla Firefox and related browsers such as LibreWolf and Waterfox.

Using the browser extension is simple. Users just have to download the extension from the respective browser’s extension library or from ProtonVPN’s official website. Once done, users need to sign in to their ProtonVPN account via the browser add-on to activate the VPN.

ProtonVPN Android App Can Be Used Without An Account

Before this important privacy step, ProtonVPN also made other noteworthy updates to its Android app. Since July 2024, ProtonVPN allowed Android users to run the VPN on their devices without having to create an account, as announced via their official X account.
