Proton Authenticator Rolls Out As A Free Login Security App

After presenting numerous security apps for privacy-savvy users, Proton has now launched the Proton Authenticator app for secure 2FA logins. This app is available for free for all users, supporting all major devices, and is available as open-source.

Proton Authenticator App Supports All Major Platforms

According to a recent announcement, the security giant, Proton (yes, we may now call it a security giant, given the sheer number of security apps it boasts), adds one more app to its arsenal – the Proton Authenticator. This app comes in as a powerful free alternative to most login authenticator applications available today.

As explained, the Proton Authenticator app provides users with a secure way to implement two-factor authentication (2FA) on their accounts. Like any other authenticator app, the Proton Authenticator app also works offline, and users may use it on their smartphones (Android or iOS) to receive 2FA codes.

However, what gives Proton Authenticator an edge is the bunch of additional features that most other apps miss. As Proton compares in their post, their Authenticator also supports desktop systems (Windows, macOS, and Linux) that most other authenticator apps lack. This makes it easier for users to manage account logins via any device, even on the same device, such as a desktop.

Additionally, Proton Authenticator implements encrypted sync – that means users can not only sync the codes across multiple devices, but also rest assured that the codes remain safe with end-to-end encryption. While encrypted sync is also available in Microsoft Authenticator and Duo apps, it’s missing from Authy and Google Authenticator.

Likewise, Proton Authenticator also supports “Direct export” – a feature only supported by Google Authenticator, with Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, and Duo missing out on it. Another enticing security feature with Proton Authenticator is the absence of ads and tracking, something only available in Duo.

However, what makes Proton’s authenticator app take the lead is its open-source availability. That means anyone can audit the app’s source code to verify the claimed features and get any issues fixed quickly.

Authenticator To Remain Available ‘For Free’

The app is currently available for free for all users. And Proton has pledged to keep it free in the future as well.

Proton Authenticator will always be free to use on desktop and mobile apps so everyone in the world can protect their data. It’s the same reason we offer basic encrypted email, VPN, and other services for free — privacy is a right.

Interested users may download the apps from the relevant app stores on their respective devices to protect their accounts with this app. Besides, users may also visit Proton’s official website to download the respective app version.
