New Task Force Formed to Combat Darknet Drug Trafficking in Guam

Guam is becoming very well known in certain circles but not for their famed coconut crabs or exotic landscape. Instead, Guam has become a hot spot for Darknet drug trafficking. Local officials have had a very lax attitude about the illegal activities and have enforced the laws against them very little, until now.

The Mandana Drug Task Force was put together in February 2017 to showcase the new attitude of Guam Customs and law enforcement officials against the growing drug trafficking problem. So far, the new task force has been quite successful in making arrests and actually getting convictions for these illicit activities.

Most of the trafficking has been operating through the Darknet on various marketplaces but there is another more concerning issue at play. Guam International Air Terminal seems to be the main way these drugs are being smuggled into the country.

Tourists have taken to sneaking in these drugs in various ways from hiding them in the lining of a suitcase or even within food items (frozen fish seems to be quite popular). Once they are inside the country, they’re able to pass along their supply to the right buyer but things aren’t as easy as they once were thanks to the new efforts of the Mandana Drug Task Force.

Guam customs has been cracking down on everything coming through their terminal and their efforts are paying off. They are also looking towards the public and any drug trafficking related information they may have to help catch these reckless criminals.

The information collected from Guam residents has been extremely helpful and has been responsible for 95% of the arrests made and warrants served since the task force was initially formed. Officials have also made it a point to offer help to those who are addicted to drugs in order to increase the effectiveness of the operation.
